How Do I Prepare for a Pre-recorded Video Interview?

Modified on Wed, 10 Jul at 12:52 PM

Here are several important steps you can take to prepare for your pre-recorded video interview:

1 - Have access to a computer with webcam and headset.

While a mobile device with a front-facing camera will also work, a computer is more reliable and will provide a larger and smoother video experience. We recommend using a headset instead of your laptop microphone for better audio quality.

2 - Use the latest version of one of the following supported browsers.

  • Supported mobile browsers (more details here):
    • iPhone: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera
    • Android: Chrome, Firefox

3 - Test your internet speed, microphone, and camera with this simple tech check tool. If you have a slow or unstable internet connection, try these:

  • Use a computer instead of a mobile device.
  • Use a cable connection instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Use a personal computer instead of a work computer.
  • Don’t use a VPN.

NOTE: Internet connections may be slow if you are applying from outside the hiring organization's country. Try all the above suggestions to optimize/boost your internet connection quality.

4 - Read this comprehensive article on How to Ace Your Video Interview. It explains why you should do the following:

  • Dress for the role or better
    • Wear what you would for an in-person interview. First impressions are very important!

  • Have a source of light in front of you
    • When you test your camera, make sure your face is well-lit and that you can still easily focus on the camera.

  • Look at the camera
    • When the recruiters watch your video, they will have the impression that you are making eye contact.

  • Sit up straight and smile
    • Try placing your webcam at eye level and use positive body language. This will help convey your interest in the organization and role you are applying for.

  • Speak as if an interviewer is in front of you
    • Use the same voice volume, energy, and inflection you normally would. You can also use some natural hand gestures as long as they don’t become distracting.
    • Be yourself and show your confidence.

  • Do the practice question
    • This will allow you to make final adjustments so that your answer to the real questions will be great. The practice question will not be used to evaluate your candidacy.

Troubleshooting Tips:

If you get disconnected in the middle of the process, try the following:

  • Refresh the browser page.
  • Restart the browser and access your invitation link once again. This will bring you back to the latest unanswered question.
  • Continue answering the remaining questions.
  • Contact the Hiringplatform.com support team to inform them of the issue and the affected question.
